my computer sucks :P

I've pretty much done everything I can to make my laptop as efficient as possible. It still comes down to having a game barely run with crappy looking graphics, or the game looking somewhat okay and get an FPS of 3-5.

It definately runs better when it looks bad, but I get sick of seeing it that way. I'm also tired of taking 30 seconds just to turn around.

I'm considering upgrading my laptop to the minimum specs for Oblivion at least. My other option is to get something new, laptop or desktop. Right now, anything is an improvement: My computer is WAY underpowered below the minimum, so anything would be an improvement. It even looks like warmed over crap on Oldblivion, to give you an idea of how underpowered it is.

So, which would be better: different computer, or see about improving this one? Said improvements will include ridding this thing of Vista.

I'm not too sure how much you'll be able to upgrade your laptop - very few of them can do much more than adding RAM and reinstalling the OS. Cetainly Vista is not laptop friendly, and doesn't run well on anything built more than a year or so ago.

I think a desktop would be a better option, cash allowing. They're relatively easy to upgrade down the line (to a point anyway), and you'd still have your old laptop for when you needed something more portable (just not for games).

Or you could get a gaming console instead :)

I have indeed considered a console, but I love my mods too much, especially the ones from AlienSlof and kikaimegami. Since everyone I have asked on and offling is saying desktop, for reasons you have stated, that's what I'm going to do :D

That's pretty much as I'd expected, yeah. As for Vista, that's exactly why it's not on any computer of mine from now on. Freaking memory hog!

Thanks for the answer :) Now I know what to do about it. Looks like I'll be getting a new PC soon :D

I'm having much the same problem (and I'm on a laptop running Vista too), only with me, my computer has these bouts of lagginess that then disappear again. E.g., I might be in an area that contains next to no lag at all, and then suddenly the framerates with drop. Then (whether it's through waiting or tweaking my graphics options, I can't tell) the performance improves again (usually it's after tweaking that it improves, though I haven't been able to work out exactly what it is that causes this). It's like the computer's thinking about something in the background while I'm playing it, even though it never used to have this problem. :/

Even running it on its lowest graphics quality does this from time to time -- I walked out into the wilderness just outside Leyawiin (and forests reeeallly eat up the FPS) and it was running perfectly, albeit looking terrible, and then as soon as I did something illegal and a guard began chasing me, it was back to full-on lagginess again.... :/
